Paul Karakusevic

Principal

Paul founded Karakusevic Carson Architects to raise the architectural design standards and ambitions for the quality of the UK’s public housing. For 20 years, he has worked with residents and local government both in the UK and abroad to innovate and improve the design of housing estates and social and affordable homes which reflect the needs of local communities; designing dwellings that give residents dignity and help to improve quality of life and chances for future generations. At present, and uniquely, the whole studio is engaged in public work.

Paul works across the studio to shape the design excellence of all projects. This includes some of the most challenging housing projects in the UK, Toronto, Lille and New York. These projects span masterplanning and urban design, new housing architecture and retrofit pilots.

Paul also oversees the studio’s research and cultural programme and has co-authored a series of publications and monographs on the studio’s work and the wider context of housing design including Dual Cities – Social Housing in London and New York(2025) which explores and compares parallel housing practice, urban cultures, policy and delivery mechanisms across the two cityscapes. Over the past 15 years Paul has lent his experience to advise the Mayor of London, the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, London councils and city mayors and housing authorities around the world on approaches to refurbishing and improving public housing estates. Paul speaks regularly about the architectural, social and cultural value of council and social housing – and has lectured at many of the world’s leading universities and architectural institutes on the practice’s work and design approaches.
