Last week we welcomed 7 students into the office for our first Drawing School.
Structured as a series of guided tours, seminars, workshops, and one-to-one conversations with architects in the studio, the first course focused on ‘the plan’.
The cohort was tasked with setting their own household brief then designing a single dwelling, imagined as part of a loosely defined urban setting or block.
Working entirely by hand, either in pen and pencil, on trace and paper, students began by setting a series of intentions for their dwellings. Each scheme responded to the lived experience of future residents, resulting in a set of unique dwelling typologies rooted in everyday need.
Technical design was encouraged as part of the process. Students engaged with key building regulations and contemporary space standards to inform their ideas.
The resulting proposals are a thoughtful exploration of how the homes we create now might meet the diverse needs we encounter in and out of practice.
Thank you to all who participated for your wonderful drawings and ideas.
