Mobilising Housing Histories*

As a studio working at the forefront of social housing in the UK, understanding of the historic context of the sector is essential. Unearthing exemplars and episodes from the past 150 years and drawing in expert contributors from elsewhere, our Research and Culture lead Mike Althorpe works to ensure housing histories are part of what we do – from learning from typologies, neighbourhoods and places, to charting the policies that have shaped where we are now.

Big thank you to Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain for recognising our work in this area and for making Mike an ‘Honorary Historian’ in your recent issue and to Hiba Alobaydi for the opportunity to connect with the hundreds of other researchers and historians doing fantastic work on social housing.

Find out more about our work and how history informs our practice in the Architectural Historian Issue 19, November 2024.
